Is there another way I can have a tooth replaced other than a bridge?
Yes. Dental implants can provide artificial teeth that look natural and feel secure. Dental implants can also be used to attach full or partial dentures. Implants, however, are not an option for everyone. Because implants require surgery, patients must be in good health, have healthy gums, have adequate bone to support the implant and be committed to meticulous oral hygiene and regular dental visits. We will provide a thorough dental evaluation to help determine if you would be a good candidate.
How does the food I eat cause tooth decay?
When the food you eat comes into contact with the bacteria in your mouth, plaque, a sticky film, builds up. These bacteria love sugars found in many foods. When you don't clean your teeth after eating, plaque bacteria use the sugar to produce acids that can destroy the hard surface of the tooth, called enamel. After awhile, tooth decay occurs. The more often you eat and the longer foods are in your mouth, the more damage occurs.
What is periodontal (gum) disease?
Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless you may not know you have it. It is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums. In the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by daily brushing and flossing. In the more advanced stages of periodontal (gum) disease, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged. The teeth can become loose, fall out or have to be removed. Call today for a periodontal exam.
What effects can smoking have on my oral health?
In addition to oral cancer, periodontal (gum) disease is found more often in smokers and is a leading cause of tooth loss and sensitivity. Smokers also experience delayed healing after a tooth extraction or other oral surgery and can be poor candidates for particular treatments such as implants. Bad breath, stained teeth and a diminished sense of taste and smell are all side effects of smoking. As a whole health dental office, we can help you understand the risks and take pride in assisting our patients with smoking cessation.
