Diet & Oral Health

Americans consume record numbers of sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks, and snacks that affect their teeth. Over time these take a toll on teeth.

Eating patterns among children and teens affect how quickly youngsters develop tooth decay. When bacteria in the mouth come into contact with sugar they produce acid that attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more. This is what causes tooth decay.

Tips to avoid tooth decay:

•  Limit the number of between-meal snacks. Choose nutritious foods that are low in sugar.

•  Brush thoroughly twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.

•  Floss daily to remove plaque (a thin film of bacteria) from under the gums and between teeth.

•  Visit our office regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Based on what we find at your exam, we may ask you to keep a food diary and will help you in making the best food choices for avoiding decay.
