Beware of these dental warning signs

Bad breath

Bad breath can be caused by the foods you eat, your oral hygiene or by dry mouth, which occurs when the flow of saliva decreases. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications, salivary gland problems or continuously breathing through the mouth. We will evaluate your mouth, review eating and hygiene habits and may prescribe artificial saliva, or suggest using sugarless candy and increasing your fluid intake. Bad breath can be a sign of larger oral and overall health problems.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a problem for many older adults. It is caused by certain medical disorders and is often a side effect of medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, pain killers, diuretics, high blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, drugs for urinary incontinence, Parkinson’s disease medications, antidepressants and many others. Drying irritates the soft tissues in the mouth, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection. Without proper treatment, dry mouth can damage your teeth. Saliva is needed to wash away food and neutralize the acids produced by plaque. more

Gum disease

Gums that bleed easily and/or are red, swollen, tender or pull away from the teeth are all signs of disease. As well, persistent bad breath/bad taste or permanent teeth that are loose or separating can signal a problem. Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite can indicate a problem and should be evaluated for possible periodontal disease.

 Sensitive teeth

Is a taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you wince occasionally? Then, you may have a common problem called sensitive teeth. Cavities and fractured teeth can also cause sensitive teeth. If we rule these problems out, then worn tooth enamel or an exposed tooth root possibly from receding gums may be the cause of hypersensitivity and discomfort. Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing gums from receding and causing sensitive tooth pain. If you brush your teeth incorrectly or even over-brush gum problems can result. We will work together to review the best way to brush your teeth and the best type of brush/toothpaste to use for your particular situation.
