The Importance of Women's Oral Health

Women have special needs at different stages of life.

Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause can all influence your oral health and the need for dental treatment. During these times, your body experiences hormonal changes. It is especially important for women of all ages to practice good oral health habits that can keep your teeth and gums healthy.

As one of Canandaigua's female dentists, Dr Borgstrom understands these changes and specializes in care for women.

During pregnancy, your body’s hormone levels rise considerably. Some women notice that their gums become red, puffy or tender and tend to bleed when they brush. This sensitivity is an exaggerated response to plaque and is caused by an increased level of progesterone in your system and is called “pregnancy gingivitis”.  It is especially common during the second to eighth months of pregnancy. We do recommend more frequent cleanings during your pregnancy to help you avoid problems.

Dr. Borgstrom believes in a whole health approach for all patients, but pays special attention to women’s health and dental issues.
